How to clean cast iron cookware
How to Clean Cast Iron Cookware
Let It Cool: Allow the cast iron cookware to cool down to a safe temperature before cleaning. Avoid immersing hot cast iron in cold water, as this can cause it to warp.
Scrape Off Food Residue: Use a stiff brush or a plastic spatula to remove any stuck-on food. For stubborn residue, you can use a small amount of coarse salt as an abrasive to help dislodge food particles.
Rinse with Water: Rinse the cookware under warm water. If necessary, use mild dish soap for particularly difficult stains, though it's generally advisable to avoid soap unless you're performing a deep clean.
Avoid Soaking: Do not put in dishwasher. Do not soak the cast iron in water, as this can lead to rust. Quickly rinse and clean the cookware.
Doing either of these things can ruin the pan's seasoning and also contribute to rusting.
Dry Thoroughly: Wipe the cookware dry with a clean cloth or paper towel immediately after rinsing. To ensure all moisture is removed, you can place it on low heat on the stove for a few minutes.
Seasoning: After drying, if the surface appears dull or if it's been some time since the last seasoning, apply a thin layer of vegetable oil or another cooking oil to the surface while it’s still warm. Wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel.
Store Properly: Store cast iron cookware in a dry environment. You can place a paper towel between stacked pans to absorb moisture and prevent scratching.
By following these steps, you can maintain the quality and longevity of your cast iron cookware which will last for years.
