What Is Direct Sowing?
To direct sow seeds, means to sow the seeds directly into the ground, rather than starting the seeds indoors and later transplanting into the garden.
There are vegetable seeds that should be sown directly into the ground because they do not transplant well after being sown indoors. Seeds such as okra, dill, green beans, carrots, do much better when sown direct. Before you get started, check the seed package for the best sowing directions. It's important to know when to start sowing.
One of the most important parts of seed sowing, whether indoors or out, is keeping the soil consistently moist. Not too wet or dry.
Seeds that do well when sown directly are:
Melons
