How to Grow Peas

Varieties

Choose from different pea varieties based on your preference and growing conditions:

  • Snow Peas: Flat pods with edible peas, harvested before full maturity.

  • Snap Peas: Edible pods with sweet peas inside, best harvested when the peas are fully formed but still tender.

  • Shelling Peas: Grown primarily for the peas inside the pods, harvested when fully mature.

Planting Time

Peas thrive in cool weather. Plant them:

  • In early spring, about 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost.

  • For a fall crop, plant in late summer, about 8 to 10 weeks before the first expected frost.

Soil Preparation

  • Choose a well-drained, fertile location with full sun to partial shade.

  • Test soil pH to ensure it is between 6.0 and 7.0.

  • Incorporate compost or aged manure to enhance soil fertility.

Sowing Seeds

  • Sow seeds 1 to 2 inches apart and about 1 inch deep. A row spacing of 18 to 36 inches is recommended.

  • For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2 to 3 weeks until mid-spring.

Supporting the Plants

Peas are climbing plants; provide support using:

  • Trellises, fences, or stakes.

  • String or netting for small varieties can also be effective.

Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, especially during dry spells.

Fertilizing

  • Peas are nitrogen-fixing plants. Additional nitrogen is usually not needed.

  • A balanced fertilizer can be applied if soil fertility is low.

Pest and Disease Management

Monitor for common issues:

  • Pests: Aphids, pea weevils, and leaf miners. Use organic insecticidal soap if necessary.

  • Diseases: Powdery mildew and root rot. Ensure adequate air circulation and avoid overhead watering.

Harvesting

  • Harvest peas when they have reached full size but are still tender.

  • For shelling peas, wait until pods are plump; for snap and snow peas, harvest while pods are still crisp.

Storage

  • Store fresh peas in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week.

  • Blanch and freeze for longer storage.

With proper care and conditions, you'll enjoy a nutritious harvest of fresh peas.
