How to make bagels

Bagel recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)

  • 1 tablespoon barley malt syrup (optional for boiling)

  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

    • Gradually add the warm water and mix until a rough dough forms.

    • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  2. First Rise:

    • Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth.

    • Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.

  3. Shape the Bagels:

    • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.

    • Shape each piece into a ball, then use your thumb to poke a hole through the center. Gently stretch the hole to about 2 inches in diameter.

  4. Second Rise:

    • Place shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

  5. Boil the Bagels:

    • Preheat your oven to 425°F.

    • In a large pot, bring water to a boil. If using, add barley
